Tour Down Under through the Southern Barossa, January 2017
Accolades were heaped on
the Southern Barossa - and particularly the volunteers, who, organised
by the Southern Barossa Alliance, made the Barossa Stages arguably the
best rural event of the 2017 Tour.
That the event ran over two days - first the Santos Women's Event on Monday, then the Men's Race on Tuesday - gave added impetus to the Southern Barossa organisers who mobilised an army of volunteers in both Lyndoch and Williamstown to not only decorate the towns but to turn on a community event which attracted visitors from around SA, interstate and overseas.
Despite extreme heat, Lyndoch's Wheels on the Green and Gourmet Village were outstanding successes and a tribute to all involved.
The Lyndoch, Sandy Creek, Cockatoo Valley and Williamstown loops are now embedded in Tour Down Under history, the region's geography with its flat stretches and hilly challenges amongst the vines echoing the scenery of the South of France, coupled with a convenient 'looped' route over good roads providing unprecedented viewing and access to the Peloton and the convenience of a long finish line down the main street of Lyndoch abutting the spacious Village Green, continue to make the Southern Barossa route so attractive to organisers.
...and then there's the 'Click-Clack Club' of crocheters and knitters who spent a good part of their year preparing creations to decorate Lyndoch's trees - and the 'Lyndoch Lycras and Williamstown Wheelers' who give new life to old bikes to place along the route - efforts truly unique to the Southern Barossa and which add to the excitement and colour of the event - and importantly draw extensive national and international interest.
Well done to all. This page will remain 'live' as an example of how the Southern Barossa 's highly motivated rural community embraces and enriches the Tour Down Under - and as a tribute to all who participated in the TDU's Southern Barossa experience in 2017.

LYNDOCH CHRISTMAS PARTY, Friday December 15 2017
This year's Lyndoch Christmas Party was another outstanding event celebrating the Festive season on a balmy Friday night on the Lyndoch oval. Attracting Southern Barossan families and others from Gawler and northern Barossan towns, this is fast becoming the 'go to' Christmas event in our region. This year the Party attracted some 2000 people who turned out to enjoy the spirit of Christmas, drool over some very fine classic motorcars, take in medieval displays by knights in shining armour, hear the outstanding voices and music of exceptional local young talent, enjoy all the fun of showground attractions, feast on great local food and wines - and of course, visit the jolly old fellow in red! From the very youngest Southern Barossans - to those Southern Barossans who've seen a Christmas or two (!), everyone enjoyed this very special event. WILLIAMSTOWN CHRISTMAS PARADE AND PARTY, Sunday 10 December 2017
Organised by the Williamstown Action Group, Williamstown's annual Christmas parade and party was another huge success, attracting hundreds of people and families to this great Christmas celebration. The event kicked off with a Parade down Williamstown's main street ending at Colonist Corner opposite Williamstown's famed 'Telegragh' Station (now the Post Office), where locals and visitors alike wonder who in the distant past misspelt 'telegraph' when the historic building was a relay station for telegraphic messages. On December 10, the old building witnessed yet another successful Christmas Party - one of the best the Barossa has to offer.
